Bagged Vacuums FAQ
Are bagged vacuums better?
The answer to the question of whether bagged vacuums are better than bagless ones is not clear-cut.
There are pros and cons for both types Let’s consider them:
Bagged Vacuum Pros:
- Because all of the dirt and debris that you collect from your surfaces are contained in the bag, bagged vacuums are generally considered to be more hygienic than bagless vacuums.
- With a bagged version there is less mess due to spillage when you empty the bag.
- With a bagged vacuum, you will not have to replce the filter as often as with a bagless version.
- Bagged vacuums are recommended over their bagless counterparts by experts for allergy sufferers. Containment within the bag helps to prevent the allergens from getting back into the atmosphere.
- Bagged vacuums often use HEPA filters to trap allergens. To qualify as a HEPA filter, the filter must be able to trap at least 99.7 percent of particulates that are 0.3 microns or larger.
- Bagged vacuums generally require less maintenance than bagless vacuums. Most bags can hold as much as 2 pounds of dust and debris. That allows you to do many cleans before emptying it. Because the filter is directly built into the bag, it never needs to be cleaned.
Bagged Vacuum Cons:
- If you have an older vacuum, you may have problems finding replacement bags.
- Every time the bag becomes full it needs to be replaced. As a result, there is an ongoing cost when you choose bagged over bagless.
- As the bag fills, the performance level of the vacuum decreases. The machine will only operate at its best when you have a new, empty bag in it.
- On some bagged vacuums, it can be hard to tell when the bag is full. If you continue using a vacuum with a full bag, you will not be picking up the dirt and debris from your carpet. With a clear chamber bagless vacuum, it is easy to tell when the chamber needs to be emptied.
- Bagless vacuums are generally less expensive to operate and maintain.
- The bagless option is more eco-friendly than the bagged version. The bagged vacuum can chew through hundreds of bags over the course of its life. When it comes to the bagless type, you are not doing anything apart from dust and debris to the landfill – you can even empty it directly into your compost bin.
- If you vacuum up something that you want to get back, such as a ring, it is easier to get it back from the chamber of a bagless vacuum than from a bagged one, where you would have to cut the bag open.
How often should you empty vacuum bags?
Most people wait until the dust and debris collected reaches a fill line on the side of the chamber.
However, to get the best performance out of your machine, you should empty it more frequently than that. Dirt and lint that is sitting in the chamber is going to impair the ability of your vacuum to do its job.
When it comes to a bagged vacuum, you should not wait until it is completely full before you empty it. If you empty it when the bag is two thirds full, you will get much better performance and you will prolong the life of your machine.
This may cost you a little more in terms of replacement bags, but the enhanced cleaning ability will make that cost well worth it.
As a general guide, you should empty your vacuum, bagged or bagless, once per month. However, you will also know it is time to empty if you notice that the suction is not as powerful as it should be.
If you notice a foul or musty smell coming from your vacuum, you will also know that it is time to empty the vacuum.
The majority of modern vacuum cleaners will have a bag full indicator light on their side.
Can you reuse vacuum bags?
While vacuum bags are designed to be used just once and then discarded, it is possible to re-use them. This should only be done if you are in a pinch, such as when you’ve run out of replacement bags but need to clean up an emergency spillage.
Before you begin to recycle your vacuum bag, you should look out for your safety by wearing rubber gloves, a paper filter mask and some goggles.
Next, remove the bag from the vacuum and then take it outside to empty into your garbage bin.
First reach in to remove the large clumps that usually cluster at the opening of the bag. Then shake the bag out over the garbage bin to remove all of the loose particles from it.
You will not be able to completely remove all of the debris from the bag, but it will be sufficient to allow for re-use. If you really need to, you can actually re-use a bag up to 3 times,
However, each time you do so, it will lose some of its performance capability.
How to know if your vacuum bag is full?
While most new vacuum cleaners will come with an indicator light on the side to tell you whether or not the bag is full, older vacuums and cheap basic models may not.
In these cases, you will have to self-monitor to know when to empty the bag. You can simply open the vacuum and have a quick check in the bag to see how close it is to the full line. You will also know that the bag is full by looking out for several tell-tale signs.
The vacuum’s motor will change the sound that it produces when the bag is full – it will be more a prolonged, soft whistle.
The most obvious sign that the bag is full is that it will not pick up dirt and debris as effectively.
A full bag will also produce a musty odor.
